Opposite workshop

KULPS workshop for preschoolers and 1st–2nd graders, 45 min

In the art workshop, we explore opposites through modeling and construction. For example, we can take the pair of opposites moving – focused. We explore how to create a sense of movement and how to create a still and still atmosphere. Students can also utilize opposites in the pace of their work. When doing something moving, they can do it quickly and detachedly, and when doing something focused, the student can calm down and work in a focused, peaceful, meditative and long-lasting way, immersing themselves in the work.

Before the workshop:
Talk about the concept of opposites. What does that mean? Is joy the opposite of sadness? Or are they emotions that alternate – come and go?

What concrete opposites do you see in nature? Or the opposites fast – slow, is one always good? How does it feel when there is peace around you? Can you concentrate in a noisy environment?

After the workshop:
How did it feel to have to build a structure as quickly as possible? What did you accomplish when you had more time?

You can also try painting or drawing both fast-paced and slowly and with concentration, so that the subject is the same.

OPS topics and objectives:

  • Phenomena, visual arts, movement

  • The student is encouraged to discuss their observations, thoughts, and what kind of actor they themselves are.

  • The student becomes enthusiastic about experimenting with different materials and techniques and practicing making structures.
