Suminagashi
KULPS workshop for 7th–9th graders, 90 min
Suminagashi is an ancient floating ink marbling technique from Japan. Students will create stunning abstract artworks and learn the suminagashi technique.
Before the workshop:
We will explore Japanese art through music, verbal art (haiku and tanka poems), and visual art.
After the workshop:
For example, students can make origami folds in class from their own suminagashi papers. Marbled paper can be used as part of a collage, for example, or it can be attached to cardboard, which creates a passepartout for the work. Students can also write their own haiku or tanka poem and use their art workshop work as the background. The works can be displayed on the school wall or the origami can be displayed in a display case or hung. Calming Japanese music could be played in the background during the exhibition.
